This 1991 BMW M5 is an unmodified, left-hand drive Euro-spec import with a documented 115k kilometers (~71k miles) on its S38 inline-six and 5-speed manual gearbox. The car was brought into Japan shortly after its April 1991 build date, and remained there until it was legally imported to the US by the selling dealer in March of this year. It has since received paintwork to correct some aging finish, an air conditioning update, as well as a new driveshaft flex disc, transmission mounts, and trunk lid struts. Described by the seller as mechanically strong and essentially stock, the car is sold with numerous Japanese service records and a clean Florida title.
Glanzschwarz paint holds an even shine and shows well overall, due in part to a recent repaint of the hood, roof, and trunk lid to correct sun fading. The finish is free of major flaws according to the seller. Minor imperfections include occasional small chips and light scratches as detailed in the gallery below, along with possible older paintwork above the driver’s door handle. Sheet metal looks free of dings or dents, the panel gaps are even, and no indications are present of prior collision repairs.The seller has been unable to find evidence of notable exterior corrosion, and no bubbling is visible in photos. Contrasting gunmetal front and rear lips look clean and undistorted along with other plastic cladding, while matching rocker covers show a handful of finish marks. Staggered-width M-System five-spokes are free of curb rash and wear early brake-cooling turbine covers and Yokohama rubber.European-market E34s featured reflector-free bumper trim and fender-mounted side markers. Stock amber corners are also seen here, along with ellipsoid low beams and E-code highs. Undamaged original glass is framed by optional Shadowline black trim, and the windshield benefits from new washer nozzles and wiper blades.Inside, power sport seats wear tight-fitting leather that shows no apparent damage and minimal bolster wear. General signs of use appear limited to occasional marking, though the rear seatback’s upper center shows a crack and separating seams. Door panels look nice apart from one cracked piece of burl wood trim, and some upholstery separation. Leather extends to the console, e-brake handle, and glovebox.A straight, uncracked dash houses clear instrumentation including an oil-temp gauge incorporated into the tachometer. An M-tech II thumbgrip steering wheel is a nice upgrade. Carpeting shows slight UV discoloration, but is in good shape thanks to protective mats. The headliner is free of common sag at the rear window. Switchgear looks intact with bright lettering and dual-zone HVAC controls that differ from US-market cars.The factory cassette deck and onboard computer show good backlighting. There is no cruise control but all features reportedly work as designed including the optional powered rear window shade. Removable side window shades are also equipped. The air conditioning system was recently converted to use R134a refrigerant and is said to work well.Under a lid held open with fresh struts, the trunk shows unworn fabric liners and plastic panels, a factory CD changer, matching full-size spare wheel, and a nearly complete tool kit including a tow hook and road-hazard markers.The engine bay appears clean down to the six independent throttle bodies, though the valve cover has been stripped of its factory black paint and the airbox of its tri-colored M stripes. The engine is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox that reportedly shifts well with good clutch feel. The driveline received a new flex disc and transmission mounts in recent months. The car uses a standard shock and spring setup rather than self-leveling rear suspension according to the sellerThe car was first registered in Japan four months after its April 1991 build date according to documentation, which also includes 14 service records in Japanese. An original Japanese-language owner’s manual and books are also included, along with three keys.
