News of hope has emerged following a reassuring set of medical tests performed on Kaavan, an elephant that has spent 35 years in captivity at the Marghazar Zoo, Islamabad. Kaavan, who originally came to Pakistan in 1985 as a gift from Sri Lanka, became widely known as the "world's loneliest elephant" following campaigning efforts from animal rights activists.

In 2012, Kaavan lost his enclosure partner Saheli with whom he shared his zoo enclosure. He has lived a life of solitude away from his kind ever since. In 2016, campaigners launched efforts to provide a better life for the animal, a move which became a closer reality as of May 2020, when a court in Islamabad ordered the closure and eviction of the Marghazar Zoo following reports of poor keeping conditions.

Following this move, the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board ordered Kaavan to be moved to an elephant sanctuary. Four Paws International, a global animal welfare organisation, have taken the lead on supporting Kaavan in his health recovery process and the road to a new home in Cambodia. When Four Paw's Director of Project Development and Veterinarian, Dr Amir Khalil, first came across Kaavan, he found him behaving aggressively and with health problems including broken nails which can be very harmful to the animal in the case of infection.

The animal has now been given the green light for relocation to an animal sanctuary in Cambodia, however, before relocation can go ahead, a set of crucial preparations need to happen, as revealed by Dr Khalil on Wednesday:"Before we move Kaavan, there are a lot of things to be done. Kaavan needs special training for a special container which we hope will come in two weeks, this container will be here. Kaavan needs 4 to 5 weeks to be trained to use this container. This is a protected contact training and this container will allow Kaavan to move to a sanctuary in Cambodia with [an] aeroplane," Said Dr Khalil.

As is, Dr Khalil expects the date of Kaavan's move to happen towards the end of November.
