Recently, Adani Power Limited has taken a historic first step into India’s nuclear energy sector by registering a new company called Adani Atomic Energy Limited. This registration happened in February 2026, shortly after the Indian government changed its laws to allow private companies to enter the nuclear power sector for the first time.

Adani Atomic Energy Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Adani Power. Its registration means that Adani is now legally positioned to plan, develop, and invest in nuclear power projects in India. This is considered the first time a large private Indian company has formally entered nuclear power generation through a dedicated registered entity.

However, it is important to clearly understand that this is not a nuclear power plant yet. No reactor has been built, no site has been approved, and no electricity is being generated. The registration is a corporate and legal step, not the commissioning of a nuclear facility. All nuclear power plants currently operating in India are still owned and run by government companies.

This move became possible after India relaxed long-standing restrictions that had kept nuclear energy exclusively under state control for decades. With the new policy framework, private firms like Adani can now participate, subject to strict safety, regulatory, and licensing approvals.

In simple terms, Adani has registered India’s first major private nuclear power company, marking the beginning of private participation in nuclear energy — but the actual construction and operation of a private nuclear power plant will still take several years.
