Daylily Fall and Winter Care

Daylilies (Hemerocallis) are an enjoyable, easy-to-grow perennial. Daylilies bring elegant color to your summertime garden. With a few easy steps, you'll enjoy beautiful daylily bloom year after year. With your bloom finished, it’s time to prepare your daylilies for their fall and winter dormancy.

Finish dividing and planting all cultivars. All daylilies should be planted no later than four to six weeks before your typical first hard frost.

Remove all dead and dying foliage and pull out old bloom stalks. Add mulch in colder climates to protect against winter freeze damage. Mulch in warmer climates if needing to improve soil quality, retain soil moisture, or assist in weed prevention.
