"The Partisan Song" - The Alexandrov Red Army Choir (1948)

"The Partisan Song" - The Alexandrov Red Army Choir (1948)

The popular military march from the times of the Civil War “In the valleys and on the hills” (other names: “The Partisan Song”, “The Partisan Anthem”, “The March of the Far Eastern Partisans”) performed by the choir of the Red Banner Song and Dance Ensemble of the Soviet Army named after A.V. Alexandrov.
Music - unknown author, possibly Dmitry Pokrass, lyrics - P.S. Parfyonov, S.Ya. Alymov. Conductor - Boris Alexandrov.
The drummer is Jacob Raikhman.
Subtitles - English, Russian and Transliteration (Russian Latin).

This video recording was made in the building of the Big Opera named after May 5th in Prague during the tour of the Ensemble to Czechoslovakia in June-July 1948.

The song tells about the battles of the Red Army with the troops of the Amur Provisional Government in the area of Spassk, Volochaevk and Vladivostok cities in the final period of the Civil War.

However, it is believed that for the first time it sounded based on the lyrics written by Vladimir Gilyarovsky in 1915 and it had the initial name - the “March of the Siberian Shooters”. And those shooters sang it in the first years of the World War 1, leaving for war. There were several other lyrics variations based on the melody of this march during the Civil War:
- The White Guard March of the Drozdovsky Regiment (1918)
- The Anarchy Anthem of the Makhnovists (1919)
- The March of the Far Eastern partisans (1922)
- The Song of the Volunteers of the ROA (1943)

In 1929 A.V. Alexandrov and the Red Army Ensemble included "The Partisan Song" in their repertoire, while Parfyonov’s lyrics was edited by the songwriter Sergei Alymov. But in 1934, a collective article appeared in the Izvestia newspaper, which indicated the name of the true author of the lyrics - Pyotr Semenovich Parfyonov. The author of the melody was declared as the Red Army commander of one of the units of the Ukrainian military district Ilya Aturov, since A.V.Alexandrov personally heard the song's melody from him but in fact that wasn't true.

This melody has become an anthem of the struggle for Mother Russia as for the Siberian shooters, as for the White Army, and as for the Red Army as well, and even for the Makhno's army as the Anarchy anthem. It all turned out very symbolically - the Motherland is one for all and the melody is the same for everyone, but only the words are different...

THE TRANSLATION OF THE LYRICS:

In the valleys and on the hills
The division was moving forward
To capture Primorye in a battle -
The stronghold of the White Army.

The Banners poured
With the red color of the last wounds,
The dashing squadrons
Of the Amur partisans were marching!

The glory of those years
Will never fade away!
The partisan squads
Conquered cities and towns.

It'll stay like a fairy tale
Like alluring lights
The assault nights of Spassk,
Those Volochaev days.

They defeated the chieftains,
They dispersed their leaders
And at the Pacific Ocean
They finished their campaign.
