USSR support for India in 1971 war #ussr #indianarmy

During the 1971 Indo-Pak war, South Asia became a flashpoint of Cold War geopolitics. The United States and United Kingdom diplomatically backed Pakistan, while the U.S. moved its Seventh Fleet, capable of carrying nuclear weapons into the Bay of Bengal to pressure India.
India, however, was not alone. The Soviet Union, bound to India by the Indo-Soviet Treaty of 1971, responded decisively. Soviet naval forces, including nuclear-armed submarines, were deployed to track the U.S. fleet, and Moscow issued a strong warning that any attack on India would directly concern Soviet interests.
This show of force deterred foreign military intervention and ensured the conflict remained regional. As a result, India was able to complete its military objectives, leading to Pakistan’s defeat and the creation of Bangladesh reshaping South Asian history.
