OPERATIONS: HELPER SERVICE in action!!! in the 1/48 MARIAS PASS on The Glacier Line

PLEASE SUBSCRIBE! for future videos. Helper Service is rarely seen, heard or talked about on model railroad layouts. On this video you see it in action!

The Glacier Line: Use the formal model railroad Design Process to plan your future layout; including OPERATIONS. The prototype BNSF locates its helper units at the actual Essex, Montana (Walton on the Glacier Line) to assist heavy tonnage trains over "The Hill."

The hill in this case is the 2.2% climb to the Summit of Marias Pass (the Rockies) which is the lowest crossing by any railroad in the United States--5216 feet. That is a major reason why the Great Northern Railway and its successors are highly successful because of good design planning by James J. Hill "The Empire Builder."

In future Operating Sessions, Glacier Line crew members will be assigned to helper service duty on The Hill. This will mimic the actual prototype and practice which occurs multiple times daily on the west side of the Hill.

Future video will show a snow plow crew in action clearing the tracks through the pass. This, 2016-2017, was one of the worst winters in a long while and the Pass was actually snowed shut for two to three days while BNSF crews were attempting to clear 12 feet of snow off the top of the tracks!
