EASILY one of the GREATEST Songs EVER...Why the HELL Wasn't it a HIT? | Professor of Rock

The wondrous story of an all-time classic song from the 70s that everyone knows by heart. But the crazy thing is…it was never actually a hit… It’s Heroes by David Bowie. Our story starts in West Berlin in 1977. Two anonymous lovers met in secrecy in front of the Berlin Wall. Above them, armed soldiers in a guard tower scour the scene. What was their secret? Well, legendary artist David Bowie witnessed this and wrote Heroes about this secret… a secret he would keep for decades... in the process of recording his legendary vocal Bowie used a microphone trick that we’ll talk about that conveyed the emotion and magic. Bowie would also say that Heroes was a bitch to sing. He always had to plan out his setlist just right to get the vocal right. The result is a song for the ages NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. But for whatever reason, these songs just came up short. On previous episodes, we have covered Message in a Bottle by The Police, Tiny Dancer by Elton John, and Night Moves by Bob Seger. But today we’re giving the number one spot in our hearts to David Bowie’s monumental anthem Heroes.

So in the latter half of 1976, David Bowie moved with his family to Switzerland. There he was hoping to escape the LA drug scene that had begun to take over his life. His addiction to cocaine had become costly, not only to his physical well-being but also his talent and his wallet. Drug abuse was wreaking havoc on his career. So, Bowie decided to break away, get sober, and recommit to what he loved the most, his music. Unfortunately, his marital relationship had been strained for some time, and within a few months, David set out on his own.

He eventually moved into a small apartment in West Berlin with friend and singer Iggy Pop. Apparently, Bowie was attracted to Berlin because, as he put it, it was “a city made up of bars for sad disillusioned people to get drunk in.” Bowie seemed to fit the bill at the time. But for a recovering drug addict whose marriage was falling apart, it was the perfect escape.

Though Bowie spent much of his time lingering in bars and taking in local culture, the Berlin years were a prolific period for him in terms of songwriting. There Bowie teamed up with famed ambient musician Brian Eno and producer Tony Visconti to release three albums in between 1977 and 1979. This trio of albums would come to be known as The Berlin Trilogy. The first album was the Avante-Gard art rock offering Low, which was an experimental break-away from previous albums. It featured songs with vocals on Side One and eerie dreamscape instrumentals on Side Two. The single Sound and Vision is its best song...
