Trudeau defends Singh, says systemic racism needs to be called out

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday said it was “disappointing” that the Bloc Québécois “continues to refuse to accept” that systemic racism exists within Canadian institutions, but stopped short of calling a Bloc MP racist after he voted against a NDP motion dealing with systemic racism on Wednesday.

Asked about NDP leader Jagmeet Singh’s comments in the House of Commons on Wednesday after Singh was kicked out of the House for calling Bloc MP Alain Therrien racist, and then refusing to apologize, Trudeau went on to say that it’s not his place to criticize Singh, the only racialized party leader in the House of Commons, “for making other people uncomfortable.”

Trudeau said he recognizes that conversations about systemic racism will make some people “uneasy.”
