In this video I go through the different apartments I looked at when I went apartment hunting in Tokyo a few months ago.
Apartment hunting in Tokyo especially nearing the months of March and April is extremely hectic. Listings disappear as soon as they pop up on the market.
I went with Plaza Housing and my agent was Adachi-san.

Some tips I mentioned in the video:
- Know your budget (and have AT LEAST x3 or x4 on hand for all the move-in fees)
- Know which train line would be easiest for you to commute to work or school with so you can eliminate the options that would be inconvenient for you.
- Go with an agency that has dealt with foreign customers in the past or bring a friend who can speak in enough Japanese to help negotiate for you
Other things to consider:
- Not ALL apartments you will find will be "foreigner friendly" (and there's not much you can do about it).
- The closer you are to the train station the more expensive it will be AND consider the amount of noise you'll have to deal with (especially as the train passes)
- For girls, normally units from the 2nd floor and above are recommended.
- If you want the most sunlight, look for a room that faces south.
(If you want afternoon sun, pick a west-facing room).
(If you want morning sun, pick an east-facing room).
- Take note of if your mansion or apartment has an elevator and how difficult or easy it would be for you to move in.
- Try to look out for the amount of noise coming in from the other rooms.
- Check for indoor storage, if you don't have enough you might end up cramming your room with more storage.
- Auto-lock "mansions" are a great security measure so if you feel iffy living by yourself then try looking for apartments that have this.
- Some cheaper apartments have tatami rooms that you might not know how to maintain so be forewarned.
- Some apartments also have MUCH older bathtubs.
