54 Seventh Avenue South: NYC Home of the Week

The NYC Home of the Week is 54 Seventh Avenue South, in the West Village 👇

You’ve probably passed this locksmith stand a million times without realizing that hidden behind it is a massive house with a secret garden and private parking.

Seventh Avenue was extended in the early 1900s—from 11th Street down to Varick—slicing through the already-existing buildings and streets in its way. (This extension was completed in 1917.) This created some really weirdly shaped buildings and lots. It’s what lead to that small triangular “Hess” plaque in front of the “Village Cigars” building. And if you really look at the buildings along Seventh Avenue South, you’ll notice how they were literally chopped at an angle along the avenue.

54 Seventh Avenue South was originally built in 1901 as a water bottling factory. Today, it’s a trapezoidal house with a “secret” garden along its southern edge and gated private parking. It’s current set up as 3 units: (1) a commercial space on the ground level; (2) a full-floor 2 bedroom apartment above that; and (3) a 3 bedroom duplex with a private roof deck at the very top. Its asking price is $12.25M.
