Steam Locomotive Steam Pipe Repair - Part 2: Machining a New Flange

As part of the steam pipe repair for the Vulcan Iron Works steam locomotive at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture in Tifton, GA, we continue by machining a new flange to replace the broken one. A piece of durabar cast iron was obtained and one side was faced off on a LeBlond 12" Heavy Duty lathe. Next, a center was used to mark the very cent of the part and the geometry of the flange was laid out on the part. A hole was then drilled and bored in the middle. The flange was then taken to a Powermatic metal cutting band saw and the flange was cut out to rough shape. Next, using a Baldor grinder, the outside profile of the new flange was ground to the layout lines. Next, the two bolt holes were drilled out on a Carlton Radial Drill and then it was back to the lathe to face the opposite side off to the proper thickness and to develop a raised boss in the center of the flange.
