Ep 3: Mining the earth with trees? Agromining with Professor Alan Baker

Professor Alan Baker of the University of Queensland's Sustainable Minerals Institute speaks to Knowns Unknown on an ingenious method of "farming" for minerals by planting trees that 'hyper-accumulate' materials such as nickel, zinc and copper into their biomass. As well as providing minerals of higher purity than in conventional mining, this 'mineral farming' could be critical in the sustainability of mining for 'rare-earth elements' which are quickly becoming ubiquitous in modern technology.
