Iran is one of few countries whose changes in leadership can legitimately be said to be of global significance and just such a crucial change will occur in mid-June when Iranians go to the polls to elect a new president.
Current President Hassan Rouhani has received relatively favourable treatment in the international media for being a ‘moderate,’ but he is constitutionally barred from standing for a third consecutive term and has seen his platform of international engagement increasingly challenged, particularly during the years of the Trump administration.
What will the public’s verdict on his presidency be? Who will stand to replace him and what do political labels such as ‘Moderate,’ ‘Hardliner,’ and ‘Reformist’ even mean in the Iranian context? And how representative should international observers take the elections of the Iranian peoples genuine wishes?

We talk definitions with the country's leading commentator to the international media, Professor Seyed Mohammad Marandi of the University of Tehran.
