Avoid-Shift-Improve framework explained in 20 seconds

Ensuring high quality of life in cities means acting now to reduce CO2 emissions for us people and for the climate. This overall objective of our work requires a paradigm shift in how mobility and urban planning is approached. The Avoid-Shift-Improve framework offers such an approach: needs-based, people-centric, and holistic. It consist of three pillars:

- Avoid/Reduce: By planning cities in a compact and transport-oriented way, motorized travel and trip length can be reduced. This includes Transport Demand Management.

- Shift/Maintain: Individual trip efficiancy (in terms of energy use and emissions) can be heightened by the choice of travel mode. Active Mobility, meaning walking and cycling, as well as Public Transport, are prioritized for their none to low per person and kilometer emissions.

- Improve: This pillar is concerned with optimization of vehicle and fuel efficiancy, as well as operational efficiency of public transport. For motorized transport, electric mobility powered by renewable energy sources is the future.
