Marathon 34mm General Purpose Quartz with Maraglow Unboxing
Hello! Welcome back to my another unboxing video of stuff.
In this video I show a simple watch that is a great example of function over form design from Marathon. It puts everything you need as a field watch in a compact and light package. By using plastic (or some kind of polymer) as its case material it weights very little (32.5g). It does have a sapphire glass, which appears to be an upgrade from its previous model (raise mineral glass, I believe).
Some of the biggest selling points for this watch are the use of a proprietary glow substance to keep the hands and markers visible in the dark (Marathon claims it lasts for 8 hours when fully "charged"), and that it fulfills military specs (Marathon is an official watch supplier for the military). At the back of the watch there is a plastic cap providing quick access when the battery needs to be replaced without the need for any specialized tools.
The whole watch is extremely utilitarian and you can't get a simpler watch without sacrificing functionality: pass-through ballistic nylon band, extremely visible hands and minimal bezel width around the dial.
One thing I noticed is when it gets to around 8:20 there is an auditable tick. Feels like there is a date component that the watch is not showing. My guess is the movement does have a date component but it's not calibrated. Manufacturers often use the same OEM parts for different models to reduce cost and I think this is the case here.
With a 34mm width this watch is considered as a small watch. It'll take some time to get used to but it's so light and yet very visible -- again it gets the job done. Having said that, for a watch that simple and running on a quartz movement it's hard to convince one to spend $200+... Though if you are looking for a field watch that is both light and durable there isn't many options out there -- keep an eye on the second hand market!
Enjoy!
