The Salt Path
Trudging up the hill, possessions on our back
Everything we own, all that we could pack
Miles stretching out along the rugged path
Crippling sense of doubt, hoping it will pass
We look for a place to camp for the night
A bare patch of wild grass is such a welcome sight
Taking down the tent in early morning light
People and their dogs have given us a fright
Knowing that we can’t stay in one place long
On this briny path we must carry on
We pass through a town, a seaside at play
But we are not welcome here and we shuffle on our way
We don’t know what we’re doing
But we don’t really have a choice
We ignore the professionals
Guided by instinct, our inner voice
Trusting our instincts, our inner voice
Canopy of stars and ever-changing light
Venus next to Mars and Jupiter in sight
We lie on our backs beneath the Milky Way
Hoping we’ll survive to live another day
Hoping we’ll survive to live another day
The cliffs fall away, embraced by the sea
And one time a peregrine joins our company
A steep, winding route, through sunshine and rain
But somehow, through it all, love conquers pain (conquers pain)
Somehow love conquers pain.
