Automating My Outdoor Lights, PHASE 2 - Wiring It All Up

Originally recorded April 29, 2023.

It's finally time to wire this up and tap into the house wiring. First I put push-on connectors onto the transformer wires, which connect to the relay. Then the entire assembly is moved over to the wires for the outside lights. to finish assembly.

Of course, I encountered an issue there. The connector I had, I was not able to crimp on to the 14 gauge solid wire. No matter how much force I put into it, it wouldn't stay on. I could make a jumper wire out of some stranded wire that the connectors would crimp on to, and then wire nut it to the house wires, but I wanted to do this in the least janky way possible. I broke out the old Weller 140W soldering gun and I was able to solder the connectors to the wire! Then it just plugs on the relay.

I put a screw in one of the floor joists to mount the relay, and I was all set. I now had a transformer driving a relay that would switch the two wires together and make the outside lights turn on and off.

Now, the question is, how am I going to make them turn on and off? That will be answered in the next part of this series!
