Providence's cityscape is transforming into a vibrant canvas with breathtaking murals that cover entire building facades. The driving force behind this urban art is The Avenue Concept, a Rhode Island-based organization dedicated to funding and supporting public art projects. They recently collaborated with Trader Joe's on a stunning mural that weaves together the rich history of trade, culture, and advertising along the Providence River.
This mural, located within walking distance of a Trader Joe's grocery store, pays homage to the Port of Providence, the city's historical trade epicenter. From the late 1600s to the early 1900s, goods flowed through this active port, heading north on the river to be distributed from the warehouses lining its banks. The mural features references to Pronto Market (Trader Joe's original name), the Indigenous community, Soapine trade cards, and more.
