My Perfect Family: Sam and Jason
Samantha and Jason Tamatea are parents to four young boys aged from two to ten years old. Life is busy in any family household, but Sam & Jason have an extra challenge. Sam is completely blind, having lost her sight as a baby after contracting meningitis, and Jason has limited vision - primarily due to the genetic condition Retinitis Pigmentosa. But their kids well know that both of their parents have a way of ‘seeing’ anything they might get up to!
The family now live in Auckland, but Sam and Jason met while studying in Canterbury. Growing up, Sam pioneered the use of braille in Te Reo Māori at Kohanga Reo and is now the Braille Awareness Coordinator at Blind Low Vision New Zealand. The couple share a love of music, and enjoying recording in a band that they formed with other blind and low vision musicians.
