What Are Drain Flies? Identify & Treatment

Drain flies, or sewer gnats (Psychodidae) are small black flies with wings that appear heart shaped at rest. They do not move like typical houseflies, rather, they fly in short hops and only for a few feet. Their wings have a fine coat of hairs, which makes them look like small moths. When crushed, drain flies leave behind a powdery residue.

These pests lay eggs in a mass of 30 to 100 at a time and hatch in less than 48 hours. They tend to live in dirty garbage disposal units, standing water, pipe traps in plumbing fixtures, or other locations with organic material buildup or scum.

Treatment can be difficult and tricky depending on the circumstance.

Drain flies – or moth flies – tend to breed and live in drains. They live off organic matter in drain traps, buildup on the side of piping, or slim that accumulates on the surface of water.

Moisture buildup need only be around for 7-10 days before these annoying pests make their home.
