Henryk Melcer-Szczawiński (1869-1928) was a Polish Composer. He began learning piano with his grandmother Józefa Klemczyńska-Melcerowa and his father, Karol Melcer, violinist, director of the Kalisz Music Society, with whom he first appeared in public on September 25, 1877. He continued his studies from 1892 in Vienna. In the years 1888–1891 he studied piano with Rudolf Strobl (graduated in 1891) and composition with Zygmunt Noskowski at the Music Institute there. According to some sources, he was also a student of Aleksander Michałowski. In the years 1892–1894 he was the student of Teodor Leszetycki in Vienna. From January 1895, he traveled with concerts to Berlin, Kiev, Krakow, Lviv and Paris. At the Second Anton Rubinstein Competition for composers and pianists in Berlin, Melcer-Szczawiński won the only prize for his Piano Concerto No.1 (presented as Concertstück), Piano Trio Op.2 and two pieces from Trois morceaux caractéristiques opus 5, and third prize in the piano competition, as provided for in the rules of the composers' competition. There he met Alexander Scriabin and Ferrucio Busoni. In the years 1895–1896 Melcer-Szczawiński was a professor of piano at the Helsinki Conservatory, giving concerts in Russia, Berlin and Lviv. On July 9, 1898, he won First Prize at the I.J. Paderewski Competition in Leipzig for the 2nd Piano Concerto (ex aequo (equally placed) with the 1st Violin Concerto Op. 11 by E. Młynarski), and in 1904 the 2nd prize at the composition competition announced by the Warsaw Philharmonic for the opera Maria. In 1908 he engaged with G. Fitelberg for 12 concerts and initiated significant changes in the repertoire policy of the Warsar Philharmonic, promoting the works of Karłowicz and symphonic music by composers less known in Poland, such as Schumann, Bruckner and Elgar.
