Elsa Pulgar Vidal - Piano
Ernesto Lopez Mindreau (1892-1972) was a Peruvian Composer. He was born in Chiclayo. At the age of seven he made his first music studies with his father, Christian C. López. In 1910 he continued in Trujillo and finally in Lima, where he was a disciple of the professors of the National Academy Federico Gerdes and José María Valle Riestra.1 In 1919 he worked as a piano teacher at the Conservatory of Panama and founded a music academy in Balboa. He studied in New York with Sergei Rachmaninoff and Zygmunt Stojowski. He traveled to Berlin on a scholarship from the Peruvian government to study piano at the Hochschule für Musik with Xavier Scharwenka and composition and orchestration with Hugo Leichtentritt. There he made his debut in April 1921 as a pianist at the Blüthner Saal.
He returned to Peru where he premiered his Fantasia for piano and orchestra, and traveled to Paris where he studied with Professor Guerin (violin) and Mlle. Chardin (song). There he made presentations at the Sala Gaveau and on July 5, 1926 at the halls of the Association Paris-Amérique Latine, where he presented fragments of his opera Nueva Castilla with favorable reviews.1 In 1928 he definitively returned to Lima.
In 1930 he was awarded for his Choquehuanca overture, in 1931 he obtained a mention from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, in 1951 and in 1966 the Luis Duncker Lavalle Prize for the Promotion of Culture, and in 1961 the Magisterial Palms in the rank of Commander for provision of the Ministry of Education.
His music has been linked to the movements of modernism and nationalism, typical of the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, it also has the influence of Andean music as well as popular music from his native land, on the coast, North of Peru, with rhythms and melodies that reach a very important academic level.
