The character first appeared in Ishirō Honda's 1954 film Godzilla and became a worldwide pop culture icon, appearing in various media, including 32 films produced by Toho, four Hollywood films, and numerous video games, novels, comic books, and television shows. The most well-known is in the MonsterVerse series, where Godzilla is a type of giant prehistoric amphibious reptile from the Permian period that fed on radiation on the Earth's surface and retreated deep underwater following the Permian extinction. Godzilla was then awakened by an American nuclear submarine in 1954.
