Akiba Rubinstein offers Oldrich Duras a queen | Vienna 1908
The great Akiba Rubinstein was an especially gifted player, especially in the endgame. If there's a list of greatest chess players to never become world champion, Akiba Rubinstein would certainly be on it. This game was from the Vienna Tournament of 1908. Rubinstein played as white against Oldrich Duras, a leading Czech player, and chess composer. In this Queen Pawn Opening, or Reversed Queen's Gambit, Duras opts for a recapture on c5 with his queen. Rubinstein pounces on this poor decision, and is quick to find a middle game combination which secures a small material plus. Observe one of the greatest endgame players do what they do best, namely win without allowing the opponent the smallest degree of counter-play.
