Sgt Day Turner & the Defence of Am Aastert Farm | Medal of Honor | January 1945
On the 6 January 1945, in the middle of the Battle of the Bulge, the 319th Regiment continued the advance of the 80th Division North of the River Sure in Central Luxembourg. By days end, the 1st and 3rd Battalion's of the 319th had liberated Goesdorf and Dahl from German occupation, with the two establishing defensive positions at the latter town in preparation for the expected German counter-attacks. These started on the 7th, but increased in determination and intensity on the 8th when German Artillery, tanks and Infantry were thrown against the American defences at Dahl.
On the right flank of the American line, was a 9-man Infantry Squad, led by Sergeant Day Turner, which fell back and held the Am Aastert farm against a numerically superior German force throughout the day. This is the story of that heroic stand.
This video is dedicated to the memory of Sergeant Day Turner and the men of the 80th Division who lost their lives in the defence of Dahl.
