Tributes flow as former Labor leader Bill Hayden has passed away

Former governor-general and Labor leader Bill Hayden has died at the age of 90.

Mr Hayden entered federal politics in 1961 and served as social services minister and then treasurer in the Whitlam government.

He was moved to opposition leader after Mr Whitlam’s government was dismissed in 1975.

Tributes have flowed in, coming from Treasurer Jim Chalmers who labelled the former governor-general as “humble, grounded, responsible and respected”.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk also praised Mr Whitlam as a man who “lived by true Labor morals and values”.
