Spending 100 Turkish Liras on a Bazaar vs. Supermarket (Sali Pazari Kadiköy)

100 Lira makes around 12.7 Dollars at today's exchange rate and there are a lot of things that you can buy for it. But Living in Istanbul is not as cheap as many people assume. So today I’m gonna find out what 100 Turkish Liras can actually get me and I wanna compare how much food I can get at a local bazaar vs. a supermarket in a shopping mall.

Does it really make such a big difference?

00:35 At the Bazaar
My first target is one of the biggest and most vibrant local markets in Istanbul: The Sali Pazari! Which means Tuesday Market but it actually takes place on Tuesdays as well as Fridays.

Like most Bazaars, it’s extremely packed and has a very rushed atmosphere but shopping here is a unique experience for itself.

Prices get even lower at around 4-5 o’clock when the akşam fiyatları (evening prices) are announced.

05:15 In the Supermarket
In the supermarket I tried to buy the exact same things that I bought at the Bazaar.
There are all kinds of supermarkets in Turkey. I went to a shopping mall that has a very big one with lots of products and fresh options when it comes to vegetables, fruits and fish.
Buying all these things in a supermarket didn't take as much time as at the Bazaar because I knew exactly where everything was and also I didn't have to ask for the price or or wait for the change every single time.

Without talking around too much, the Bazaar definitely won.
There were only a few things that were actually cheaper or the same price in the supermarket and that's the tomatoes and the cauliflower. BUT the prices on the Bazaar get lower during the evening after the akşam fiyatları get announced. So I’m pretty sure that the Bazaar will always get you a better bargain than the supermarket.

The advantage of shopping in a supermarket is having a greater choice of products. For example I bought a sweet potato or an organic juice which simply isn't available on a Bazaar. Shopping in a supermarket is also more convenient because you can get all these different products from all over the world in a small area.

On the other hand, shopping on a Bazaar can be quite exhausting and crowded as well. People are yelling, teyzes with their shopping carts blocking the way and social distancing is almost impossible. But the Bazaar is the place where you can actually experience life, you can talk to the vendors and farmers and ask where the food is coming from and it's easier to avoid too much plastic use.

At the Bazaar I definitely got more food for my 100 liras and the food is much fresher which is the most important thing in my opinion.
Because we all know the inside matters, not the outside :)

At the end of the day the difference wasn't extremely big but I think it’s more important where we spend our money instead of just looking at what is the cheapest option.

09:20 Main problems of supermarkets
Supermarkets are definitely more convenient BUT there are three main problems:
1. The plastic overuse and pollution of the environment
2. Local farmers get pushed away by big chains and suppliers
3. And supermarket food is full of chemicals and bad stuff for our health, like additives or preservatives.
And yeah it’s more expensive overall.

I guess this video is not only a comparison of how much food you can get for 100 Liras but also giving you an idea where it is better to spend 100 liras on. Where we spend our money matters.
