This video contains:

👉🏻 Fused Optical Fiber Inverter: image conduit with a twist! Each tiny optical fiber acts as a pixel of the transmitted image- and here you can see that the bundle of fibers has been twisted 180 degrees to invert the image without using lenses.

👉🏻 Icy Bodies (exploratorium): exquisitely beautiful and dynamic interactions between small chunks of dry ice and a shallow layer of water play out in this exhibit created by artist Shawn Lani at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Frozen carbon dioxide (dry ice) is denser than water, but the small pieces do not sink- instead each piece, at −78.5 °C, becomes encapsulated in a shell of ice that then floats. As the dry ice sublimates from a solid directly into a gas, jets stream from holes and fractures in the ice shells propelling and spinning the bits upon the water's surface. Droplets condense out of the air forming a cloudy mist in the vicinity of the cold gas jets which is lighted from the side to dramatic effect. 🌟 With special thanks to the Exploratorium!

👉🏻 Rubin Vase

👉🏻 Fresnel Minor Lamp: precision geometry and dichroic glass create an explosion of colors in this incredible creation by artist seanaugustinemarch .

👉🏻 Tumble Rings: the links in this chain are connected in a special way such that the top ring appears to tumble to the bottom- a compelling illusion!

👉🏻 Flame Eater Engine: also called a vacuum engine- operates by opening a valve during the piston intake stroke to pull in a bit of burning gas from the flame- the valve closes and the trapped hot gas expands pushing the piston. The exhaust stroke then has the gas cool, contract, and get pushed out the same valve right before the process repeats. Slow motion captures the intake of the flame through the valve/mouth at the cylinder head which gives the appearance that flame is being chewed- hence the name.

👉🏻 Holiday Physics Ornament: a wondrous mirror illusion featuring a snowman, Santa, and bit of physics magic! Wishing all who celebrate a Joyous Christmas.

👉🏻 Santa Radiometer: a St. Nick themed classic physics toy- a light powered ornament for a tree near a sunny window.
👉🏻 Parabolic Mirror Array- 360 mirrors arranged to reflect to a single focal point in this exhibit entitled “All Eyes on Me”. 🌟With special thanks to the Exploratorium!

👉🏻 Fused Optical Fiber Image Conduit: this cylinder is made of one million fiber optic channels per square centimeter, each fiber providing one "pixel" of the transmitted image. Each fiber has a core of clear glass encased in a thin shell of glass with higher refractive index (but each is only 10 micrometers in diameter), light enters each fiber at the top of the conduit, travels down to reflect off the image, and then travels up and out to reveal the image. This conduit contains over 6 million such fibers!

👉🏻 The Random Walker: (a favorite from my archives) a second model of two Galton Boards designed and produced by IFA.com- this version is made to demonstrate probability in investment returns of a global stock market portfolio relating to risk capacity. Slow motion reveals the erratic path of each steel ball (second half of video). The red graph shows the distribution of 592 monthly returns (mean =1%, SD=5%) representing data from 50 years of an IFA Index fund- here the random “walk” of 3000 steel balls falling through 12 levels of branching paths always produce a close match, and both distributions tend toward the famous bell curve distribution. A wonderfully designed modern version of the Galton Box invented by Sir Francis Galton(1894) to demonstrate the Central Limit Theorem - showing how random processes gather around the mean.
