It’s my day off and I’m taking a little time to taste some wine. I always find it incredibly valuable to pit the same varietal from different producers and regions next to each other to compare and contrast and distinguish what the through lines are. Tasting the wines this way can not only really help to solidify those key grape markers you’ve read in books, but it also helps with understanding the impact of weather, winemaking, and soil on a wine. I’ve pitted two classic producers from classic regions to see how they fare - 2011 Thierry Allemand Cornas vs. 2014 Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz.
