Broken corks are the WORST. Generally I find some solace in the surgical struggle to remove an old cork that I foolishly, & unsuccessfully tried to remove with a wine key. But the disaster is very real when you need to work quickly and the cork crumbles beneath you like a week old cookie. When the eyebrow sweat ensues you know, it’s time to do the walk of shame to get the dreaded cheese cloth. Please welcome your knight in shining armor….THE DURAND.
Why You Should Use It:
If you’ve ever opened an older wine, you know the struggle is very real. The Durand was introduced to me a few years ago and has since been a mainstay in my repertoire of essential tools. Relatively new (seriously what took so long?!), it reduces the possibility of a broken cork down to less than 1%. Furthermore, wine soaked, slippery, or depressed corks that would otherwise be pushed into the bottle by an ah-so or shattered by a corkscrew upon removal (a VERY common issue), are saved by the 2-fold approach to extraction. You prevent the depression by gripping the cork from the inside, but keep it contained by the prongs on the outside to allow for seamless and easy removal. While there have been a small handful of instances when it hasn’t worked, it takes a real shit-storm of a cork for this thing to fail.
Helpful Hints:
-I’ve seen many users misuse this tool by mistakingly placing the prongs through the slits & directly INTO the cork. This is not the intention of the design and will undoubtedly leave cork trash in your wine.
-INSTEAD, cross OVER the worm to create an x/y axis over the cork
-use all of the same principles you would for a wine key & an ah-so (this includes the Ariana Grande move as well as slow and steady extraction away from your face and chest)
-It’s $125 and very sturdy and durable, but like most tools, mine has suffered from overuse and been abused by pesky, stubborn corks. Occasionally the screw on the ah-so part comes loose and needs to be hammered back in, but if you’d rather not go the DIY route, the Durand company offers repair and/or replacement for up to one year.
