The Jam Master Jay Challenge explained...
When I first touched vinyl, I was already integrated into Hip-Hop. Most people don't know this but I started out as a B-Boy. Then I immersed myself in Graffiti. From there I tried MCing, until I finally took a stab (excuse the pun) at Djing. So to say I learned about Hip Hop and it's 4 elements organically, would be an accurate statement. For this reason I teach it the way I do. I throw my students into it so that they can – physically — make mistakes. I want them to feel the frustration of learning a specific technique while indirectly developing a tactile relationship with the vinyl and the music that they’re using. The alternative watching a youtube video tutorial, and never really personalizing the art of DJing.
So, my advice to upcoming DJs is to trust enough in their own learning instincts to learn on vinyl first, rather than starting out on a Controller or CDJ. That route, to me, does not yield authentic DJing. The meaning of what a DJ is changed when the new DJ technology emerged. I feel the true relationship between the DJ and their music collection is fading. Today, DJs rely on coded software to do what they can and should do for their selves. So while technology makes the process of playing music easier… Taking the easy route when you're first learning is a mistake. For DJing, in my eyes, is about self expression, originality, and resonating with a crowd. Not about working a certain software and playing hit songs.
This is something I constantly try to bring to my classes, I want my students to know that their sets are an extension of themselves, and they are all unique people that are here to learn how to DJ authentically. So, as a promoter of learning on vinyl first, I also think it’s important that upcoming DJs today understand the root of all DJing is vinyl — and to try to have a relationship with vinyl before they move to digital software. Knowing how to work with records will teach someone how to develop those tactile instincts, and it will make anyone a more well-prepared DJ.
