"Hip Hop" DJ Tree
Like a family tree, DJing has it's own Tree.
In week 3 of the Fall #djskillsandstyles semester we examined the relationships between the 3 major pillars of Hip Hop DJing. Like any tree, this one has it's root, Kool DJ Herc. Herc is credited for DJing Hip Hop's first party inspired by his sister Cindy.
Afrika Bambaataa and Grand Master Flash make up the tree's stump if you will. Whether it was Bam's knack for finding and playing the most obscure records or Flash's technical innovations (looping aka "quick mix theory" and backspinning aka "clock theory"), their contributions inspired everything that DJs like GrandWizzard Theodore did hence forth.
And so to me, cats like Theo, Breakout, Baron, Tony Tone, Jazzy Jay, Grand Mixer D.St, Whiz Kid, Red Alert, Jam Master Jay, Mix Master Ice, Marley Marl, Chuck Chillout, Mix Master Gee, EZ Gee Rockwell, Johnny Juice, Spinbad, Cash Money, Jazzy Jeff, Grand Dragon KD, Aladdin, Cut Master Swift, Invisibl Skratch Piklz, X-Ecutioners, etc., represent the branches to this tree.
If you're a self proclaimed teacher of DJing. Whether you run a DJ school or DJ workshops (online or in-person), take a moment to educate your students on the work of the aforementioned authors/pioneers of the art you teach. The technique within DJing is just one aspect of this. It's history is just as important, and learning a discipline without context makes for incomplete training.
