Angrboða – The Mother of Monsters in Járnviðr
Angrboða, whose name is often interpreted as “she who brings grief,” is one of the most enigmatic figures in Norse mythology. She is associated with Járnviðr—the Ironwood—a dark and ancient forest said to lie in the east, beyond the world of the gods. This place is not merely a forest, but a symbolic and ominous domain, closely tied to fate and the events leading to Ragnarök.
In Völuspá, an old giantess is described as dwelling in Járnviðr, nurturing the offspring of Fenrir—one of whom is fated to devour the moon. While not explicitly named in the poem, this figure is widely interpreted as Angrboða in later tradition.
She is also known, primarily from later sources, as the mother—together with Loki—of some of the most feared beings in Norse myth: Fenrir, the monstrous wolf destined to break free at Ragnarök, and Jörmungandr, the world serpent that encircles Midgard and will rise during the final battle.
Unlike the Æsir gods, Angrboða stands apart—neither counted among them nor fully defined in surviving sources. She represents forces tied to fate, inevitability, and the unfolding of events that even the gods themselves cannot escape.
