Global National: Nov. 5, 2023 | Gaza suffers 3rd communications blackout as death toll climbs
The third communications blackout in Gaza since Oct. 7, confirmed by Palestinian telecom company Paltel, has made it even more complicated to share details of the new stage of Israel’s military offensive. The United Nations (UN) said there is no place safe in Gaza right now, while Global Affairs Canada said it is aware of three Canadians who managed to cross the border into Egypt through a third party, as hundreds of Canadian citizens wait at the Rafah border crossing. Daniele Hamamdjian has more.
A day after meeting with foreign ministers from Arab states, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made an unannounced visit to the West Bank to meet Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. As David Akin reports, the two leaders explored ways to ease civilian suffering in the Gaza Strip — and what role the Palestinian Authority might play in a post-conflict scenario.
The unfolding crisis in Gaza has sparked protests across the world for weeks. Some of those demonstrations are leading to violence, and emotions are spilling over into U.S. college campuses. Jennifer Johnson looks at how the bloodshed between Israel and Hamas is becoming a flashpoint for post-secondary students.
Quebec is bracing for a major strike starting Monday morning. More than 400,000 public sector workers will be on the picket line, all under the banner of the common front. They're a collection of four different unions representing employees in the education, health and social services sectors, demanding better wages and working conditions in what is expected to be the largest mobilization since it was founded 50 years ago. Felicia Parrillo reports.
At the height of the pandemic, testing wastewater for COVID-19 became a great way to track how much the virus was circulating in specific communities. Canadian researchers are now using the same method to test freshwater in Nova Scotia, where they've recently discovered COVID-19 and other human viruses in the province's lakes. Heidi Petracek looks at how that discovery is creating hope for safer water down the road.
And finally, there is no easy way for the horrific conflict between Israel and Hamas to be explained, with devastating images and information circulating online. As Katherine Ward reports, understanding trauma under these circumstances is crucial as it may look very different from one person to the next.
