Panel Discussion: "Hurry to the Light," with Kareem Roustom

In Mulieribus and Camerata PYP present "Because I Will Not Despair," a program featuring the world premiere of Jessica Meyer's "Because I Will Not Despair" and the West Coast premiere of Kareem Roustom's "Hurry to the Light."

On April 27, 2023, Composer Kareem Roustom, Willamette University's Professor of Classics Dr. Mary Bachvarova, PYP Musical Director David Hattner, and IM Artistic Director/Willamette University's Choral Activities Director Anna Song sat down for an hour of discussion about "Hurry to the Light" – a musical setting of text from Homer’s “The Odyssey,” newly translated by MacArthur Genius Grant recipient Emily Wilson.

In this translation of this epic tale, we see more than ever before the many examples of the power of women. Inspired by Wilson’s subtleties in language to “clear the misogynistic dust left by previous English translations” (Roustom), Roustom only gives voice to the women of the story, rather than our hero, Odysseus.
