The World's Worst Designed City

Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is an Asian economic powerhouse that has grown from a trading port to a megacity of over 10 million people. But it was not designed to cope with such a large population.

Due to forces both natural and man-made, the city is struggling under the pressure of its success. Because of the challenges it faces, Jakarta is often touted as the world’s worst designed city. It frequently tops the list of cities for worst traffic, is notorious for its poorly constructed housing, and it regularly suffers devastating floods.

In the face of these challenges, the Indonesian government has decided to build a new capital city in East Kalimantan. The construction of the new capital is controversial, but it shows how Jakarta in its current form is no able to cope. Although its transport and road infrastructure, along with the city’s flood defenses can be improved, these measures are simply patching over issues that will continue to grow as Jakarta's population rises and global warming worsens the impact of yearly floods.

So, what do you think? Is Jakarta the world’s worst designed city? How does it compare to where you are from, and what challenges does your city face? Leave a comment below and let us know.
