The Second Derivative Test provides a method to classify critical points as either local maxima or minima based on the concavity of the function at those points. We begin the process by taking the first derivative of a function and setting it to zero to solve for x, identifying the function's critical points. Then we take the second derivative.
It might initially seem backwards, but the Second Derivative Test is surprisingly logical: if the second derivative at a critical point is negative, this indicates the function is concave down at that point, thus representing a local maximum. Conversely, a positive second derivative suggests the function is concave up, indicating a local minimum.
