This temple, the first of the Pancha Bhuta Sthalams, symbolizes the Prthivi or earth element, and holds a deep connection to our Mooladhara Chakra, the root energy center within our body.
The Mooladhara Chakra, is the foundation of our survival instincts, governs emotions like security, ambition, and stability. When imbalances arise, manifesting as anxiety, fear, or lack of motivation, they can be healed by tapping into the grounding energy of this sacred temple.
The name 'Ekambaram' itself is deeply symbolic—‘Eka’ means one, and ‘Aambaram’ refers to a mango tree. Together, it signifies 'The One Mango Tree,' a reference to the temple’s ancient mango tree, which is one of the significant landmarks of this temple. The Lord of this Mango tree is the presiding diety Ekambareshwarar or Ekambaranathar.

Spread across a vast 23 acres, the Ekambareshwarar Temple’s origins date back to at least 600 AD, and over centuries, it has been lovingly rebuilt and enhanced by great dynasties—the Pallavas, the Cholas, and later, the Vijayanagar king - Krishna Deva Raya who made significant contributions to the temple’s magnificent structures. This temple is revered by all the four saiva kuravars or saiva saints in their compositons like Devaram.
Every ancient temple has a story etched into its walls, Ekambareshwarar Temple, too, holds a mesmerizing legend that displays divine play, devotion and ultimate union of Shiva and Shakti.
The story begins in the celestial abode of Kailasa, where Goddess Parvati playfully covered Lord Shiva's eyes. In that very moment, the Sun and Moon dimmed, plunging the entire universe into a deep, impenetrable darkness. And so, The balance of nature was disrupted
To restore order, Shiva opened his third eye, flooding the cosmos with divine light and rescuing creation from despair. Yet, Parvati, overcome with guilt for her playful act, sought redemption. Shiva, in his boundless compassion, instructed her to perform penance on earth to cleanse herself of the karmic consequence.
Descending as Goddess Kamakshi, Parvati chose the sacred grounds of Kanchipuram for her penance. At the exact spot where the temple now stands, she crafted a Shiva Lingam out of sand—the Prithvi Lingam—and began her deep penance beneath an ancient mango tree.
But true devotion is always tested. As her tapas reached greater intensity, Shiva tested her resolve by setting the tree in flames. The ever-compassionate Lord Vishnu, her divine brother, came to her aid. Taking the crescent moon from Shiva’s head, Vishnu reflected its cooling rays, calming the fire and protecting both the mango tree and Parvati. This act earned Vishnu the name Nilathingal Thunda Perumal, meaning 'The Lord Who Wields the Moon.' His shrine, nestled within the Ekambareshwarar Temple, is one of the revered 108 Divya Desams, or the sacred temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
But Shiva’s tests did not end there. He unleashed a flood, threatening to wash away the Prithvi Lingam Kamakshi had so lovingly worshipped. Fearing for the Lingam, she embraced it tightly, her devotion unwavering. Touched by her immense love and dedication, Lord Shiva melted—both literally and metaphorically—and appeared before her in human form. In that moment, their divine union took place as Ekambaranathar married Kamakshi.
The sacred mango tree under which Kamakshi worshipped Shiva remains an eternal witness to this divine story. Over 3,500 years old, this Sthala Vriksham is no ordinary tree—
