Asthras are divine weapons which had left a permanent mark on legendary epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata. Wielded by the skilled archers of yore, such as Parashuram, Ram, Lakshman, Ravana, Indrajit, Drona, Karna, Arjun and a host of other warriors – these Asthras rewrote the destiny of battles and the course of history itself.
To invoke an Asthra, a sacred mantra is chanted, unleashing vibrations that ripple through the very fabric of existence, altering the sound waves in Ether. This divine resonance, known as 'Naadha Brahma,' echoes only within the celestial realms, a symphony heard by enlightened souls alone. To possess these potent weapons one must please the corresponding devata. For instance, Brahma for Brahmastra, or Shiva for Pashupataasthra. and Vishnu for Vaishnavastra.
Each Asthra boasted distinct properties: the Brahmastra, capable of undoing any creation of Brahma, and the Naagapaasham, a celestial weapon akin to Nagaasthra. while Garudaasthra was the eagle weapon to counter against the Nagaasthra.
Lord Ram used GandharvaAsthra to destroy an army of 10,000 chariots, 18,000 elephants, 14,000 mounted horsemen, and 200,000 foot soldiers in just three hours, displaying astonishing superhuman speed and power.
Among the mighty Asthraas, three stand supreme: Vaishnavaasthra, Paashupataasthra, and BrahmandaAsthra.
Passed from Guru to Shishya, the secrets of Asthra mantras were guarded, entrusted only to those who sought the greater good. These warriors safeguarded the knowledge in their memories, not written down anywhere, always ready to invoke the Asthras when the world was in need. Yet, even heroes faltered; Karna forgot his Asthra's mantra due to Parashurama's curse.
After the great Kurukshetra war, the bearers of Asthra knowledge diminished, leaving only Arjun, Ashwatthama, and Krishna. Yet, Ashwatthama's memory faded after a curse from Krishna.
Similarly, those who survived were deemed unworthy of this knowledge, preventing its transmission to the next generation.
After the Mahabharata war, the use of Asthras ceased. Nevertheless, Arjun managed to pass down the knowledge of the asthra to Vrishaketu, the last son of Karna who survived the epic battle.
During the Kurukshetra battle, Arjun slayed Karna, unaware of their shared bloodline. Kunti revealed the truth, shattering the Pandavas. Arjun was filled with remorse for killing of his own blood and Yudhisthira's anger at his mother's hidden truth led to a curse on all women, decreeing that they would no longer retain the ability to keep secrets.
Following the Kurukshetra War, Vrishaketu, Karna's son, visited the riverside where his father had often prayed to Surya dev. Driven by a desire for revenge against his father's enemies, Vrishketu was confronted by Arjun. Instead of vengeance, Arjun sought forgiveness and invited Vrishketu to learn the ways of archery, becoming a great warrior like his father. Arjun mentored him extensively, imparting knowledge of divine Asthras like Brahmastra, NarayanaAsthra and other Asthras. Vrishketu became proficient in these sacred arts, ruling over Angadesh and Indraprastha for an extended period. He actively defended Hastinapur's borders alongside the Pandavas, participating in numerous battles.
However, Vrishketu became the last guardian of Asthra Vidya.
