Ever wondered about the pros and cons of a centreboard versus a vertical lifting keel? In this session of our design feasibility study with KM Yachtbuilders, we do a deep dive into keel options - how they operate, how each affects interior space and the importance of rudder depth. We consider a Bestevaer 53, look at features of a Stadtship 56 including telescoping rudders and study stability curves and polar diagrams.

Criteria for our New Boat, Distant Shores 4
- a monohull sailboat under 50 feet in length
- a pilot house or raised salon you can steer from
- a variable-draft ballasted centreboard for performance and exploring
- comfortable office space for both of us so we can work while cruising
- 2 double cabins, 1 single cabin, sea berths
- day head near the companionway with shower, ensuite head and shower for master cabin
- galley ideally near the companionway but alongside is good too, if not too far forward.
- twin wheels in the cockpit, not a tiller
- table in cockpit
- stern scoop
- stern arch with dinghy lift
