Swing Keels and Centerboards: Pros and Cons Explained

Swing keels are the most versatile keels available, but it comes at a cost. Let's discuss those costs. I'll also show you two technical diagrams to explain the mechanism of both lifting keel designs, the swing keel and the centerboard (centreboard in the UK).

The main difference between the swing keel and centerboard is whether it's a weighted keel or not. The centerboard is unweighted and not as good at reducing heel. Both reduce slippage to leeward considerably.
