If you are a seafarer, you must have faced the following questions from a landlubber-
How does ship stop in the water? or
How does ship brake system work?

A ship can be braked, but not by using a conventional braking system. It uses various methods, sometimes applied individually, and sometimes combined, to brake and maintain station (geographic position).

In normal conditions, the Marine Engine of the ship is reversed or the CPP propeller pitch is altered to change the thrust direction of the propeller, which gradually stops the ship.

When the ship needs to stop in an emergency, Crash Stop Maneuver is done, or the Anchors of the vessel are dropped, in case the main engine is not available.

A ship is a sluggish body, and therefore it has a certain lag of response to the action carried out to bring about any change in its motion. Ships are not braked conventionally, instead, cannot be braked conventionally primarily because of the medium in which it moves.

This video helps in understanding the physics behind the stopping of a ship at sea. When at harbour or port, the station is maintained by mooring lines that tether the ship to the berths.
