Global National: May 25, 2024 | Israel continues Rafah operations despite ICJ ruling
On this episode: In the Middle East, Israeli forces have reportedly carried out new attacks in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the recent deaths of more than 30 people. Despite a ruling from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordering Israel to cease its military operations in the city of Rafah, Israeli officials have indicated that they will continue with their offensive. This decision follows Israel's dismissal of arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against its political leaders and the leaders of Hamas. Redmond Shannon reports.
Canada is urging G7 nations to provide financial aid to Ukraine by using seized Russian assets. Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has been leading efforts to encourage G7 finance ministers to adopt the plan, which was discussed during the recent three-day G7 finance ministers' meeting in Italy. G7 leaders, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, are expected to finalize plans to provide financial assistance to Ukraine during their upcoming meeting in Italy early next month. David Akin reports.
As the spectre of last year's unprecedented wildfire season looms, Canada faces an early start to wildfires in several regions. Currently, a significant portion of the country, particularly the northwest, is under high to extreme fire danger conditions. The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) reports a total of 99 active wildfires nationwide. With summer on the horizon, concerns arise about the potential impact of a changing climate on Canada's tourism industry. Kyle Benning's has more on this pressing issue.
Meanwhile, South Asia is facing a prolonged, intense heat wave during the world’s largest election, with officials in India using oral rehydrating salts to combat near-50-degree heat. Much of Pakistan is also facing unbearable conditions. Eric Sorensen reports.
In response to the recent drug poisoning death at the University of Victoria, calls have been made for British Columbia to mandate CPR and naloxone training in high schools across the province. The death of an 18 year old in January has prompted her parents to urge the province to take action, deeming the tragedy preventable. Neetu Garcha reports that British Columbia is considering making CPR training mandatory in high school curriculums, following the example of Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.
