The road is approximately 145 km (90 mi) long and reaches an elevation of 2,042 meters at its highest point. Along the way, travelers can enjoy the amazing views of the surrounding mountains, forests and lakes, visit various landmarks Bâlea Waterfall, Bâlea Lake, Vidraru Dam and Poienari Castle. Transfăgărașan is usually open from June to October, weather permitting. The elevation 2042 (where Bâlea lake is also located) can also be reached in winter by cable car: Bâlea Cascada - Bâlea Lake cable car, route length: 3,700 m
