A Troubling Truth for Women

One of the most devastating realities that female survivors face is not being believed; even in the presence of evidence. This is especially true when these survivors report their experiences to law enforcement. Unfortunately, the abuser’s word is often believed over that of the survivor, especially when the responding officers are male.

This bias within law enforcement is both systemic and deeply personal. According to accepted statistics, 40% of male police officers have reported being abusers themselves. This percentage increases significantly when considering the number of abusive officers who choose not to self-report.

This unsettling truth tends to have a dangerous impact on the way domestic violence incidents are reported and their subsequent outcomes for survivors. Women are often labeled as irrational, mentally ill, and unstable by their abusers. This inaccurate characterization is readily accepted by law enforcement, making it disturbingly easy for abusers to portray themselves as the victims. Consequently, this situation makes it nearly impossible for the true victims to receive the help and justice they deserve.

If you are a survivor who has endured this painful and traumatic reality, please know that you are not alone. Your experiences and the associated feelings are valid. Stay strong and continue to advocate for yourself.

We stand with you always.
