1983 Lancia Rally 037
The Lancia Rally 037 holds a unique place in rally history. Introduced for the 1982 season and campaigned heavily in 1983, it became the last rear-wheel-drive car to win the World Rally Championship manufacturers’ title. At a time when Audi’s all-wheel-drive Quattro was rewriting the rules of rally performance, Lancia proved that a lighter, well-balanced RWD machine could still fight back.
The 037 was built specifically for Group B rally competition, a short but legendary era known for extreme power and minimal restrictions. Beneath the angular bodywork sat a mid-mounted supercharged 2.0-liter inline-four producing around 276 horsepower, paired with a lightweight tubular chassis and fiberglass body panels. Compared to the turbocharged AWD rivals, the 037 relied on agility, throttle control, and driver skill.
The car seen here carries the iconic Martini Racing livery, one of the most recognizable paint schemes in motorsport. During the 1983 season, legendary driver Walter Röhrl, alongside co-driver Christian Geistdörfer, helped secure key victories including the Monte Carlo Rally. That season ultimately earned Lancia the manufacturers’ championship, marking the final WRC title ever won by a rear-wheel-drive rally car.
Seeing the Rally 037 in person makes it clear how purpose-built these Group B machines were. The wide stance, huge rear wing, and aggressive aerodynamic bodywork were designed purely for speed across gravel, snow, and asphalt rally stages.
Even decades later, the 037 remains one of the most celebrated rally cars ever built and a symbol of one of motorsport’s wildest eras.
