The Trans Experience | Breakout Session E | 2022 Making a Way Conference
This presentation provides an overview of some of the current challenges to transgender inclusion, both politically and theologically, in Christian spaces and suggests pathways toward teaching greater nuance, respect, and acceptance for trans individuals in Christian theology courses. Though trans individuals have made great strides in acceptance and legislative progress in recent years, the broader situation remains grim. Thus, rather than being considered a topic of minimal importance or even contradictory to Christian theology, trans issues, now more than ever, are a necessary addition to Christian theology courses. Though Christian dualisms, gender complementarian ideals, and particular interpretations of Genesis have often been stumbling blocks on the path toward trans theological inclusion, the Bible and Catholic Social Teaching both provide material for much greater compassion, understanding, and inclusion for trans individuals in and outside of Christian spaces.
