Making Long-Lasting Connections | Breakout Session D | 2022 Making a Way Conference

As queer closeted, Christian children, we were often times subconsciously forced into managing our caregivers' emotional stability. Essentially, we downloaded a relational script that said: “I need to protect you from my queerness.” Now, as adults, that script may very well persist, playing out in our current romantic relationships. We're still hiding our full selves from our most important relationships.

This breakout focuses on relational attachments and developing a new internal script that allows you to show up, fully. Want to get out of your own way and create long-lasting, deeply connected relationships? This workshop is for you!

As a young child growing up in a religious household as a queer person, Isaac (he/they) often felt odd, like a broken boy. After surveying his religious beliefs and sexuality, with several years in therapy, Isaac found a resting spot that felt holistically authentic. Isaac started iAmClinic in 2010 to serve the LGBTQ+ community and to help others navigate the road he’s journeyed, using a model that is based on relational repair – whether that be a focus on one’s relationship with self, another, or higher power. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his partner, Joe, and their dog.

From a young age, Jamie (they/them) has been fascinated by relationship dynamics and the inner workings of the human psyche – the limitless learning and development around these subject matters invigorates Jamie in both their personal and professional life. Jamie has a Masters in Arts in Clinical Mental Health, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Marriage and Family therapy. They have facilitated relationship and life-skill workshops over the past seven years throughout Colorado. In addition to their work at iAmClinic, Jamie currently serves in a non-profit leadership role, and volunteers on the board of directors for a local non-profit organization.

As a licensed professional counselor, Rae (she/her) works with individuals around identity formation and how they want to 'show up' in the world around them. She specializes in career counseling, which focuses on assisting clients answering questions like "who are you, where are you going and how will you get there?". Outside of counseling work, Rae volunteers with the National Career Development Association’s Government Relations Committee (with the American Counseling Association), to help further awareness mental health and career development concerns at a national level. In her spare time, Rae loves spending time with her wife and two dogs.
