Things I wish more parents new (as a behavior analyst)

These are five of the most important mindset shifts I teach parents, and they’ve changed everything for so many families.

They’re not flashy or complicated.

But once you really understand them, the way you respond to your child starts to feel calmer, clearer, and more effective.

Instead of just reacting to the behavior (like yelling, whining, ignoring directions), you start looking beneath it and asking:

🤔 Are they trying to solve a problem in the only way they know?
🤔 Do they not understand what I asked?
🤔 Are they trying to get my attention, escape a task, or ask for something—just in the wrong way?

And once you see the need behind the behavior, you can make small but meaningful changes, like:

💫 Giving clearer directions
💫 Practicing a skill before it’s needed
💫 Reinforcing the behavior you DO want
💫 Creating routines that reduce confusion or resistance

These aren’t dramatic changes—but they’re the ones that actually lead to long-term growth. 

Because when you stop chasing quick fixes and start teaching the right things at the right time, you don’t just see fewer meltdowns or power struggles—

you build trust, confidence, and a child who starts to succeed in the moments that used to fall apart.
